Mid-range phones started to get much more popular in Bangladesh in 2018. Till the end of 2017, low and low-mid range phones and a few high-end releases were mostly in focus. Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is priced BDT 28,990. We usually put BDT 20,000-30,000 price range phones in the mid-range category. Gadgets like Xiaomi Pocophone F1, Nokia 6.1 Plus, Huawei Nova 3i, Oppo F9, Vivo V11 and Xiaomi Mi A2 are currently leading this budget range with some genuine “magnetic” features to attract the majority of the consumers here in Bangladesh. Can Samsung overtop all these sensational devices with Galaxy A7 2018? Let’s figure it out with an in-depth review.
Design and Display
Galaxy A7 (2018) comes with a 6-inch full-view design with perfect sizing for the pocket, but the front camera is in a full top bezel (No notch, teardrop or camera hole). It is still a trendy design but lacking a more advanced concept. The back is made of glass with premium and shiny looking. But if you have a taste for elegance, you may find the blue, gold and pink colors a bit too shiny. The black should still fit in your hand well. The frames are made of plastic which isn’t a nice thing for the price. But the finishing is so good that you can hardly recognize it as plastic and think that it is aluminum metal. Overall, adequate and moderate design but lacking a progressive approach.
The display is a Full HD+ Super AMOLED one with superb quality. Viewing-angles and under the sun brightness are excellent. You will clearly understand why Super AMOLED technology is preferable over IPS LCD technology among the buyers. The standard and size of the screen are one of the most appealing facts of this smartphone. Besides, a Gorilla Glass is used for the protection of this beautiful thing.
Battery & Performance
The 3300 mAh battery might perform better than you think mostly because the name is Samsung. It should easily let you go through the day with one single charge if you are frequently busy with it. For a more modest user, it shall support two days or more. No fast charging technology is used in the battery which is a flaw if you consider the importance of it today. But it shall take about one and a half hour to full-charge your device which isn’t that bad.
Samsung used an Exynos 7885 Octa chipset here. People who are more familiar with Qualcomm’s chipset should know that it will perform a little lower than the Snapdragon 660 but not as low as the Snapdragon 400 series. You shouldn’t feel any lag for regular use. In-demand apps and graphics related programs will run smoothly together with the support of 4 GB RAM, Mali G71 GPU and 2.2 GHz octa-core CPU.
Camera & Video
It is the first smartphone from Samsung where they have used a triple camera. One camera has 24 MP phase detection autofocus, another one is offering 8 MP 120° ultra-wide lens and the last one a 5 MP depth sensor camera to optimize and support the information or details of the shots. It is pretty impressive for a mid-ranger. The ultra-wide mode will give you a new perspective to the shots with a much wider view. Autofocus, portrait mode works great as well. Color contrast, dynamic range, focus, softness, sharpness are pretty decent in the daylight. But you may experience too much brightness in some cases if HDR is on which we didn’t find as a big issue. Night shots won’t be that pretty as the daylight shots. You will see a lack of details and too much softness at low-light conditions. Noise is relatively well-controlled though. 24 MP front camera is well-configured as well. For the most part, we find that the camera technology from Samsung, in this case, is more natural, accurate and superior to its other mid-range competitors.
Other features
Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 version comes with a fingerprint sensor on the right side of the frame. It is a little unusual for a Samsung device. The sensor responds a bit slow as well. There is also face unlock, but fingerprint is still the more secure option.
The network signal, GPS accuracy, call quality are splendid like most other Samsung devices. It is one of those major reasons which is holding Samsung in the first place. There are also FM Radio, plenty of internal storage (64 GB), a dedicated Micro-SD slot, dual-SIM etc. features. The sound quality is loud enough and clear. You will also get Dolby Atmos sound with a headphone on.The device is not waterproof and no USB-C was used. An LED notification light on the front is missing as well which you can consider as some of the downsides. It is not a performance master like the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. It doesn’t have a stylish notch design with 4K video support like Nokia 6.1 or offers fast VOOC battery charge and teardrop design like Oppo F9. But Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) will not let you feel behind concerning performance or trendy design. Its triple camera quality is impressive, Super AMOLED display is stunning, hardware and software quality is superior. So, we count it as a well-balanced, fair and up to the mark medium cost smartphone ahead of most of its competitors.
